The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Macomb Township were French traders and fur trappers who explored the area around 1795-96. By 1807, the first permanent European settlers had arrived and by 1829, there were more than 100 white people living in the township. In 1846, the first post office was established in Macomb Township with Wm Henson as its first clerk. In 1865, a new courthouse was built and service began from that location until 1903 when it moved to downtown Chicago due to financial reasons. In 1911, a school opened for students in what is now Parkview Elementary School on North Main Street and continues to serve students through present day including Intermediate/Secondary education; however this school closed circa 1957 when property along South Main Street became available for development without having any connection with or use by Parkview Elementary School (a fact which was not known until later research). In 1927–28 an Act of Congress authorized $25,000 towards the erection of a municipal hall and library within one year. This building was completed in 1928 but never used because it lacked space for both functions. The last municipal meeting ever held took place on December 3rd of that year with Leland Eiland presiding as recorder over a meeting attended by Commissioners George Fenton (Chairman), John J Howe (Vice Chairman), Augustus Alderwood (Secretary)and James M Schoenefeld (Treasurer). Macomb is a city in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,041 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Macomb County. The area now comprising Macomb was part of one of the original townships in Cook County on the southern border of Chicago. In 1838, it became a village when it merged with other villages in Cook County to become the town of North Township. On December 15, 1907, it became a city after being annexed by Chicago. The first settler in what is now Macomb was John Lewis who arrived in 1837 and platted his land near modern-day Northport and Dearborn Streets. He named his township "Macomb." By 1840 there were 9 families living in "Macombs" - all farmers - and they had 1 store and 2 dwellings. Only 3 more families followed until by 1852 there were only 10 families remaining in "Macombs". In 1857, Charles Noyes established a gristmill on Sangamon River near present day Park Avenue and Elm Street; this milling activity helped expand macaroni production into Northwestern Illinois for export to Michigan markets during that time period. In 1865 Noyes sold his interest in the mill to Nicholas Morrone who organized CSN Railroad which led to increased trade with Detroit via that route as well as greater macaroni exports from Northwestern Illinois through Superior (now Dearborn) Street to Detroit before turning northwest along Woodward Avenue across Lake Michigan into Indiana Territory where prices for macaroni increased drastically then flowed back downriver due to high demand from points eastward including Cleveland! Noyes' successor John Gage opened another gristmill on Sangamon River about ½ mile upstream from Morrone's Mill near its confluence with the river known today as Gage Road just north of present day McHenry Boulevard/I-94 exit 169A off I-94 approximately two miles east (northwest) of downtown Chicago following what is now Ford Road northeast from I- 94 at its intersection with Stevenson Road/I-294 south/southwest from Schaumburg Rd./I-94).
