One such founder of this community was John Prentice, who built a rifle shop on State Street in Macomb in 1849. In 1865, the first handgun laws were passed by Congress and these regulations began to take effect. As a result, gun ownership became more regulated and restricted within Macomb specifically. In 1924, the first pistol laws were passed by Congress as well and these regulations continued to restrict gun ownership for several more years until 1934 when they expired entirely. Consequently, handguns remain one of the most common firearms in Macomb today.
Macomb, Illinois is a town located in Macomb County, Illinois. The population was 24,938 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1836 and named for Colonel John Macomb (1789-1858), an officer in the United States Navy who had fought in the Mexican-American War and against Mexico in the War of 1812. The first settler to arrive in what is now Macomb was James Heting on July 5, 1836. In 1840, Hiram Beecher settled there with his family. Beecher started a mill which still stands today. William Bray also settled there around this time. In 1845, Elijah Kelley moved to Macomb from Weymouth, Massachusetts and established himself as a grocer/tanner/factory owner/carpenter. He built two stores on Main Street: one on the east side of town and another on the west side next to Beltline Road near present day Elmhurst Avenue.
