In 1892, the first military Ammunition Plant was established in Macomb, Illinois. This plant was used to produce shells for the American Civil War. The plant closed in 1907. In 1917, the Macomb Arsenal was opened and it became one of the largest ammunition plants in the United States. It produced shells for World War I and World War II. The Arsenal closed in 1991.

Macomb is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 29,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Macomb was established in 1835 and became a city on February 15, 1906. The first settler in what would become Macomb was James McGregor, who arrived in 1835 from Scotland via Canada. He and his family had to leave their home because of the War of 1812 between Great Britain and America. In 1836, John Cavanaugh settled on the site of present-day Macomb Township with his wife and four children. In 1855, Hiram Jobe founded an agricultural village called Indian Hill near the mouth of the Sangamon River northeast of downtown Chicago. Jobe's village served as a model for later cities such as Racine (1862), Green Bay (1866), Milwaukee (1867), Duluth (1868),and Grand Rapids (1871). After years of experimentation by various officials with different forms of government organization and governance within various villages or hamlets within Cook County – including Indian Hill – it was decided that an organized city should be formed under the leadership and direction of aldermen elected directly from individual precincts instead of through group voting methods used elsewhere in county government at that time. This idea gained support from Mayor Neilson Potterton after he toured several other newly created large American cities during his mayoral term starting in 1865.. On February 15, 1906 – more than 100 years after McGregor settlement – Macombsville became a full-fledged municipality when City Hall Annexe No 1 opened its doors following erection by vote by residents therein pursuant to charter granted thereto by then Mayor Averill Harriman upon recommendation thereof to that effect…. On November 3rd 1920 voters approved passage of Charter Amendment 2 giving rise to Macombsville’s first police department which began operations on December 4th 1921…. With its well-preserved architecture which remains one reason why [the] community has retained some degree of popularity over the past 100+ years; Macombsville offers residents qualityof life similar to but much less expensive than most major URBAN communities today…..
In 1818, John L. Macomb was elected as a U.S. Representative from Illinois. In 1825, he became the first Mayor of Detroit, Michigan. In 1830, Macomb served as the Vice President of the United States under Andrew Jackson. From 1840 to 1845, he served as Secretary of State in Jackson's cabinet.
