The history of Macomb can be traced back to 1824 when a group of farmers from nearby Pustoma Township purchased 800 acres (30 ha) of land near what is now the intersection of Smith Road and Fulton Avenue. In 1829, they organized as the "Village of Macomb" and built a meeting house on East State Street. They adopted a Constitution and by 1830 had developed into an agricultural village with 7 stores, 3 blacksmiths, 3 sawmills, 1 post office and 1 schoolhouse. By 1840, they had grown to 10 stores (13 if you include one which was destroyed in an fire), 5 blacksmiths (6 full time employees), 4 sawmills (2 full time employees) and 2 schools (1 primary school and 1 secondary). In 1847–48, while still under construction on Fulton Avenue between State Street and Park Boulevard, the first railroad through central Illinois arrived in central Macomb: The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. This made farming more difficult as transportation became important for businesses like meatpacking plants that could no longer rely simply on horse or wagon transport from outlying villages like Pustoma Township where prices for goods were too high for farmers to afford even small inputs such as cornmeal or flour without traveling long distances to get them. With railroad transportation came new jobs for men who would build tracks; runDIR switches; operate locomotives; man switchbacks; do other menial tasks required for running trains; or direct traffic throughout central Illinois during their working day. By 1870 about half of all workers in central Illinois were engaged in agriculture either directly or indirectly through various partnerships with railroads including those with other states such as Indiana Cattle Company/Northeastern Railway/Illinois Midland Railway etc., givingMacombs some degree of self-sufficiency when it came to food production despite its relatively small size compared to other major American cities at that time. Macomb is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. Macomb is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is the most populous city in Northwestern Illinois and one of three cities with a population over 2 million within the Chicago metro area (the other two are Chicago and Madison). The history of Macomb begins with settlers who arrived in 1810 as part of the Northwest Territory which was formed from parts of Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. The first permanent settler in what became Macomb Township was John Aspinwall who founded a cabin on a bend in the Kankakee River near present-day Elmhurst Avenue and Ford Road. In 1817 Aspinwall sold his land to Abraham Lincoln for $1,000 cash. Lincoln leased land from David Wells to establish Greenfield Village which later became Macomb Township. The first school in what would become Macomb Township was built on North Main Street just east of present-day Elmhurst Avenue by Parson Weems in 1824. A new school building was erected on West Adams Street near downtown Detroit about a year later but it burned down during an accidental fire that killed four students and teacher Abraham Lincoln. The first post office opened in Macombsville on South State Street about six miles west of Elmhurst Avenue on October 12, 1826 by William Haines Sr.. On May 10th, 1830 Joseph Ratcliffe opened a general store at corner of Park Boulevard and First Streets which became known as "Ratcliffe's" because it served as the town's main source of food until 1865 when it closed due to competition from larger stores opening up around town. In 1840 surveyors noted there were no buildings or residences within five miles (8 km) of where Elmhurst now stands except for one dwelling known as "Griffin's House" located about two miles northeast along Kankakee River at modern day Griggs Road/Route 52 intersection - this property would be annexed into Elmhurst shortly afterwards when Griggs Road/Route 52 split off from Uptown Drive near Elk Grove Village). As early as 1840 macombsville had 5 frame houses only 3 tools shop 4 blacksmiths 3 wagon shops 3 stores
