In 1817, Samuel Wilson bought 4 acres (1 km²) east of present day Machesney Park from John Prentice for $650. Wilson built a gristmill and sawmill on the site, which he called Prairie du Chien because of its resemblance to the Canadian province of Quebec. He also began planting trees and selling fruit as early as 1819. By 1830, Wilson had erected stores and residences within what are today downtown Machesney Park while northwest Chicago continued to grow without him or much development taking place until World War II when industry expanded into northwest Chicago pushing westward towards Northwestern State Street where Macheney Park lay until annexed by downtown Chicago in 1945 following Japanese surrender during World War II In 1847, University Of Illinois freshman George Washington Kapp purchased 4 lots northwest corner lot #2 from Wm Higginson for $450 with intent to build an agricultural college on it due east of UofI campus then known as Western Reserve Institute founded by Kapp along with Amos Kendall & others but never completed due to lack of money Kapp renamed his new college “Illinois Wesleyan University” soon after buying property Kapp donated all rights & buildings including mill, storerooms & house (& other lots adjoining) which became campus open air Memorial Chapel dedicated Oct 21st 1863 Rev Dr Robert Capps officiating First African American graduate at UofI “Dr” James Weldon Johnson
