Machesney Park was a small town in the state of Illinois, located about 21 miles north of Chicago. The community was founded in 1871 by John Machesney, a lawyer and politician who served as Mayor of Chicago from 1872 to 1874. Machesney Park grew rapidly due to its proximity to the city, and by 1895 it had a population of just under 1,200. By 1916, however, the population had decreased to just over 100 due to economic reasons. In 1951 the town ceased to exist when it merged with neighboring village of Westmont. Today, Machesney Park is an unincorporated community located within the limits of La Grange Township. Machesney Park was first settled primarily because it was close to downtown Chicago and there were no other places for farmers and townspeople to settle. The area now comprising Machedney Park originally consisted only of woods and swampy ground inhabited by Indians previous to European settlement. The first Europeans that came into contact with this area were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1673. They built a trading post on what is now State Street near what is now Elmhurst Cemetery; this post served as the center for trade between Holland and Native Americans until 1681 when English settlers moved into the area and started trading with the natives more frequently. After arriving in Illinois, these English settlers discovered that they could not live permanently amongst Native Americans so they set up their own villages gradually spreading out through much ofpresent-day Illinois – one such village being Machesney Park which began operations on July 3rd1871 by John Machsny (a lawyer). Machsny’s Village quickly became successful because he offered goods at low prices which lured businesses away from downtown Chicago where goods were becoming increasingly expensive leading many entrepreneurs fleeing eastward towards Buffalo Grove or even later westward towards Downers Grove IL., however John Machsny did not stop at his Village but continued developing it further adding stores, houses & schools while also hosting visiting dignitaries such as Ulysses S Grant & Abraham Lincoln who both made stops at his Village during their visits to Northwestern Illinois When McCormick Paper Company opened up shop on Dearborn Street in 1892 all hell broke loose! A lot of people thought that this company would bring development & prosperity TO THE AREA BUT NO ONE REALIZED HOW IMPORTANT THE PRODUCT WAS BECAUSE PAPER WAS THEN LESS EXPENSIVE than EVER BEFORE! This change led directly into some OF THE FIRST DISPUTES IN OUR COMMUNITY OVER EDUCATION Funding for schools went FROM $500 PER YEAR BACK TO ABOUT $1K PER YEAR AFTER THAT INCIDENT! With less money available per capitaLocally we decided THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO BOYCOTT ALL THE SCHOOLS IN ORDER TO GET OUR FACTS CORRECT!!! When asked why he did this JOHNMachsny SAID “WE WANTED WHAT WAS BEST FOR OUR COMMUNITY NOT WHAT WAS WORST FOR ALL OF THEM” In 1903 Mayor George Gould enforced Prohibition which caused many residents To leave their homes For fear Of getting arrested However despite this harsh measure Mayor Gould still managed To keep our Community running smoothly THROUGHOUT THIS TIME On November 2nd 1918 Machensey Park merged with neighboring Westmont Village creating one large community comprised mostly of farming families . At its peak Machensey had over 1 200 residents but today numbering around 100 parents live within its boundaries
