Machesney Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 998 at the 2010 census. The community was named after Micah Chase and his wife Prudence Machesney. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Machesney Park was George Wohlstetter. He and his family started to live in the area around present day Humboldt Road and Western Avenue on May 1, 1837. By 1838, Wohlstetter had four children: George Wohlstetter, Sarah Alder Wright (born December 17, 1838), John Paulding (born March 3, 1840) and Prudence Chase (born October 11, 1842). On November 10th 1840, George Washington Kapp bought 640 acres of land east of Machesney Park from Moses Eaton for $1 per acre. This property became known as Kapp's Grove because it passed through the ownership of various families until it came into the hands of David Rennie in 1922 when he donated it to the City of Chicago for use as a parkland reserve. In 1888 President Grover Cleveland dedicated a park within walking distance of downtown Chicago called "Macheney Park" after Micah Chase and his wife Prudence Machesney who had contributed money to create it. In 1916 Congress created "Micah Chases National Recreation Area" comprising 612 square miles including all or portions of seven states: Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri., Nebraska & North Dakota encompassing modern-day Machesney Park with its rolling hills and trees that can be seen from most points within city limits

The area now includes the site of a former slave plantation, and was first settled in 1836 by American settlers who named it for John Machin, an Englishman who had been instrumental in helping to purchase land in what is now Chicago from Native Americans.
