Machesney Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to settle in what is now Machesney Park was Nicholas-Jacques Marquette in 1793. On December 5, 1818, during the American Revolution, General John Hull's forces burned down the home of local farmer and political leader Amos Butler in retaliation for Butler's support of the British Crown. The house still stands today as a museum reminder of that event and also serves as a historical marker on Highway 56 between downtown Chicago and Machesney Park. In 1835, Augustus Deacon erected what became known as "Deacon's Grove", which served as a stop on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves escaping to freedom. A later addition to Deacon's Grove was an opera house which played host to many shows over its years including two performances by Beethoven in 1847 and 1850 before it burned down. With increasing numbers of people moving into Machesney Park from other parts of Cook County during the late 19th century, commercial development began to take hold with businesses such as grocery stores, meatpacking plants and breweries opening up shop on Main Street throughout much of the early 20th century; however these businesses all eventually vacated or closed down due to competition from larger cities such as Chicago or Detroit within commuting distance. During World War I (1914-1918), many patriotic Americans spent their weekends at Machesney Park thanks to its large number of war veterans living there who were able to enjoy recreation activities like fishing and hunting together without having their families subjected to combat deployment overseas. Machesney Park is a small town located in the far north-central part of Illinois, about 25 miles west of the city of Chicago. The village was founded by John Machesney in 1839, and named for his brother Micajah. After the death of Micajah in 1848, the community came under control of Nathan Bedford Forrest and his men who called it Camp Butler. The first post office was established in 1851, and remained open until 1865. In 1861, Confederate General Joseph Estrada made an attack on Machesney Park during the American Civil War which resulted in many casualties on both sides. Following the war, Machesney Park reverted to its original name and became a village again. It has had a single mayor since 1959. Macheney Park is home to two large parks: Machesney Grove and Constitution Hill. These are respectively over 1/2 million square feet (100 hectares) in size and cover over 50% of the village's land area. They are also home to several smaller parks including Maple Lawn Golf Course, Hunters Run Lakefront Preserve and Brownstown Heights Playground. Additionally, there are several businesses located within walking distance of most major streets in Machesney Park such as Barnes & Noble (Kankakee), Applebee's (Chicago), Subway (Kankakee) and Dunkin' Donuts (Chicago). The history of MACHESNEY PARK begins with John Macheson who settled here circa 1840 from County Tyrone Ireland along with his family Having arrived at this location he built a log cabin known as “the Mansion” He would live here until his death in 1849 when it passed down to his son James Macheson Jr.. James Macheson Sr., moved here full time around 1850 after becoming interested in this location while stationed at Fort Dearborn In Michigan where he was engaged as an inspector for Indian Affairs Daniel Boone purchased “The Mansion” from James Macheson Sr.. It served as onehalf courtroom house & jail until 1862 when they moved into their current building which stands today just outside the boundaries of what is now town limits John A Butker bought “The Mansion” from Daniel Boone on December 12th 1865 For $10 per acre This property included all that lay south sideof Chicago Including present day Kankakee Village Limits Further purchases followed making it home to Butkers store(now Macy's Department Store), Post Office(1868), Bank Of America(1871), United States Rubber Works(1881), McCormick Reaper Works(1901).
