When Machesney Park was established in 1871, the town had a population of only 100 people. To accommodate for the increasing population, the township built a new school in 1875 and an even larger one in 1881. The first high capacity kit was not built until 1912. The name “Machesney” comes from an older English name meaning “place where apples grow” or “garden plot”. By 1848, Machesney had developed into a small farming community with about 10 residents and two churches – Stonestreet African Episcopal Church and First Methodist Church which were both built between 1848 and 1850 on property donated by Governor John Altgeld (1805-1863). Over time, other settlers arrived to Machesney including German immigrants who arrived during the 1840s; Irish Catholics who came during the late 1800s;Italian American workers recruited from southern Italy during World War II; Japanese American farmers recruited during World War II; as well as many others who made their homes here over time. In 1916, following annexation by Chicago, Machesney Park became an official city with its own police department and streetlights! In 1978-79, following approval by voters via referendum, Mayor Randy Bowen established machinist/shop steward training programs for machinists/tool operators residents of Machesney Park through his mayoral proclamation order No 4 dated October 8th 1978 which announced plans to improve shop conditions withinMachineseyParkand create more job opportunities across all economic sectors within our city Limits…. Plans call for hiring 400 machinist/tool operator trainees over 5 years starting January 1st 2009 thru December 31st 2013…..This will create thousands of new jobs throughout our city limits while increasing wages by 20% annually….A Historic Auction Of Machinery And Tools Held On Saturday November 3rd At Malkin Hall To Benefit Our City Homeowners association
