Daley explained his decision in a letter to the editor: "I cannot support any measure which would make it necessary for civilians to obtain licenses and carry arms." On March 5, 1876, Mayor Daley signed an ordinance making it legal to possess and use handguns without a license. Two months later, on April 10, 1876, Mayor Daley announced that he was running for reelection and would not sign the newly enacted gun control bill into law if it were presented to him again. In May of that year he was re-elected with 71% of the vote in what is considered as one of the most landslide victories in city history.

Machesney Park was a small, rural community in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was located on the east side of Chicago and bordered by the communities of Cicero to the north and North Lawndale to the south. The population of Machesney Park was 1,500 at its peak in 1892. The park is now a part of the city of Chicago. The first European settlers in what is now Chicago were French colonists who arrived in 1763. In 1804, General James Wilkinson purchased land northeast of Machesney Park from John Yates for $3,000. Wilkinson renamed his new communityland Machesney Park in honor of Archibald Maccabee, an American Revolutionary War hero and member of Parliament from Virginia who had fought against British forces during the war. In 1835, Methodist Episcopal missionaries founded a church at Machesney Park. The first school opened in 1840 at Macheda House on Westcott Avenue; it closed shortly after due to lack of students. A second school opened in 1851 at Smith House on State Street; it also closed shortly after due to lack of students and money problems. A third school opened in 1857 at East Farm Road; it also closed shortly after due to lack of students and money problems. During World War I (1914-1918), many local businesses offered their services to help support military efforts including manufacturing munitions and selling food supplies. Some residents even raised chickens or hogs for troops stationed nearby during World War I as part of what is now known as "Chickens 'N' Hogs." After the war ended, many people choose not to return home because they found urban living too demanding or difficult than life back home around Macheney Park where traditional agriculture still thrived despite advances made since then such as Ford Motor Company’s entry into Illinois which began producing automobiles there starting with Model T models in 1908 followed by other brands over time until production ceased altogether in 1927 when mass production moved westward across state lines beginning with Chevrolet for Americans entering World War II). Macheney Park experienced rapid growth following World War II thanks largely to government investment spurred by President Harry Truman's call for increased industrial activity throughout America following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor that year which led Congress to establish federal aid programs called "stimulus" specifically designed for economic development within newly acquired territory like Cook County including Machesney Park which received an initial allocation totaling $8 million dollars drawn from Treasury Department coffers just 3 years later – making this one among thirteen so designated under Truman's New Deal agenda dubbed "the Midwest." This injection injected much needed cash into local economies but also resulted in some displacement as well as displacement rates becoming far higher proportionately than those seen elsewhere within Cook County especially along Roosevelt Roads along Lake Michigan where tanning factories became numerous overnight displacing farmers while building high rise apartment buildings developed parks/reserves adjacent thereto while suburbanites enjoying lakefront properties characterizing today's Mackinac Island finest examples only 50 years ago enjoyed tax exempt status notwithstanding interurbans expanding rapidly past limits originally prescribed (see picture below)). Despite some attractive offers from developers seeking more suburban living space near major airports these developments have been increasingly outstripped both financially speaking and physically by rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods surrounding them creating social segregation unlike anything seen before or since often resulting negative environmental impact attributed particularly drive-through restaurants etc.) . Today little remains original save isolated farmhouses with memories few would care about if not special occasions like wedding receptions etc.)

During World War I, Machesney Park lent its support to the United States government by erecting Liberty Hall as a military hospital. In 1922, Machesney Park adopted its current name - Machsley Park - after Jock Mahoney, who had been its mayor from 1916 to 1921.
