Machesney Park, Illinois is a city located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 74,794. The city is named after Daniel Webster Machesney, who served as a member of the Illinois General Assembly from 1841 to 1847 and as Secretary of State from 1850 to 1855. Gun barrels have been found in Machesney Park since at least 1800 by farmers looking for animal fodder. By 1860, gun barrels were being used as part of Arsenal furnituremaking in Chicago. The first guns made in Machesney Park were pistols and rifles made by local blacksmiths and rifle maker John Sibley in 1861-1862. From 1865 until shortly before World War II these weapons were produced by the Springfield Armory Company which had moved to Machesney Park from Skokie Heights on the north side of Chicago late in 1862. The first firearms built specifically for use within police departments were handguns developed at the Skokie Heights Armory company during World War I shortages caused by increasing military demand worldwide (and also because many citizens no longer could afford rifles or shotguns). In 1922- 1923 two new models were created based on advances brought about by early 20th century revolver development—the "Pawtucket" and "Sturgeon"— both with three rounds per magazine and with extended triggers that allowed quick drawing/release. These pistols became known as .45 ACP service pistols because they chamber 5mm cartridges instead of 7mm rounds like most other handguns then available. In 1934- 1935 a model called the "Chicago Defender" was introduced which featured an extra round in each magazine for self-defense purposes; this particular pistol also had a grip safety that prevented it from firing unless held down with one hand while still holding the buttstock with the other hand
