In 1865, John Tilton purchased and donated land to Machesney Park for a park that would become one of Chicagos most popular areas for recreation and education. The present day Machin Park was dedicated on November 17th, 1865 by then Mayor Of Chicago General George Biddle with funds from Mr. Tilton’s estate. In 1898 Machesney Park passed through annexation by invitations from several villages including Lemont, Hollandale and Argyle which had all experienced rapid growth during late 1800s as railroads opened up new markets for agricultural products and services. The original village boundaries still exist today with about six miles (10 km) between each village boundary line creating an open space called “The Woods” which remains today one of MACHESNEY PARKs main attractions for recreational purposes as well as educational opportunities for its citizens and tourists alike! Today there are more than 3500 acres (14 sq mi) of forestedland within MACHESNEY PARK borders while over 20 parks offer activities such as baseball, basketball, football, soccer/football etc., making it one of Chicagos largest community based parks systems! Some notable features include: picnicking lakefront property next to McCormick Place; woodland trails that lead throughout both Village neighborhoods; tennis courts located near numerous grocery stores; playgrounds available for children ages 4-12 years old; water fountains located throughout the development including a lovely pond close to Children’s Museum; two golf courses – one just south of Forest Glen Drive ballpark complex on Elmhurst Road known simply as “Golf Course #1″ this course has hosted many events such as Umpqua Classic golf tournaments over recent years while Golf Course #2 situated east of I-294 near Interstate 55 offers access to various woods/open fields perfect for teeing off or playing putts from!
