In 1856, Machesney Park was the site of a gunnery exhibition. The first modern American artillery was exhibited here in 1857 by Captain George Armistead. It is said that this event inspired Abraham Lincoln to become an armorer and shotyer himself. Ammunition production began in the area in 1865 when the Chicago Armoury became operational. In 1896, the Illinois Armory complex was built on the site of what is now Machesney Park High School. This complex included a range, ammunition storageyards, and workshops for many arms manufacturers including Winchester, Colt, Remington, Smith & Wesson and other major gunmakers. The years since have seen dramatic changes to ammunition manufacturing in Illinois. Today, most ammunition production takes place within Springfield’s city limits at two companies – Ruger Ammunition (USA) and Winchester Ammunition USA – both of which are headquartered in Springfield under one roof. Machesney Park, Illinois is a small town in the far southcentral region of Illinois. It is bordered by Wabash River to the east, and Cook County to the north and west. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Machesney Park was John Machin in 1814. The town was named for General James Machin, who led an military expedition against the Osage Nation in 1813. Machin's settlement grew rapidly, supported by traders from nearby Chicago. In 1833, Machesney Park became a village under its own government with a population of just over 100 people. In 1840, machin family descendants founded La Grange (later Metropolis) on land that had been home to their ancestors since 1795. La Grange quickly became one of the most influential businesses and political leaders in Machesney Park and Metropolis until it merged with Chicago in 1903 to form Tower Research Corporation Limited Partnership (TRLC). In 1907 Guglielmo Marconi began transmitting radio signals from his transmitter site at McCormick Place through Machesney Park's then-new electric streetlights; this helped make MACHESNEY PARK one of America's leading commercial towns during early radio development. By 1920 TRLC had become part of American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T). In 1984 American Telephone & Telegraph Company spun off its BellSouth operating company as Time Warner Inc., which changed its name to Time Warner Entertainment Inc., or TWI for short after purchasing Turner Broadcasting System in 1995. In 2006 Time Warner Entertainment Inc., along with Turner Broadcasting System’s other divisions including HBO®, ESPN® and TNT™ were purchased by Comcast Corp., making TWI one of the largest entertainment companies in history - larger even than Google parent Alphabet Inc.). Today TWI oversees all aspects of Time Warner Entertainment’s television operations as well as all digital platforms including HBO®, ESPN®, TNT™ and Turner Classic Movies™

Machesney Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is located east of Chicago on the northern border of the city limits. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. Machesney Park was named after General James K. Machesney, who fought with General Ulysses S. Grant in the American Civil War and later served as commander of troops in Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. Macheney Park was first settled in 1838 by farmers from Michigan Territory, who named their land Machsenny after General James K. Machesney's unit that fought at Buena Vista Hill during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1847, a post office was established at Machsenny and it remained active until 1893. The community's first school was built in 1840 and operated for three years before being closed due to financial difficulties. A second school opened in 1846 and continued to serve until 1954; it also housed an early church which burned down in 1905 but was rebuilt and reopened as a parish hall soon afterward. In 1865, machsenny became a village when it incorporated as part of Evanston Township; it remained an independent municipality until 1974 when it merged into Cook County as part of the city of Chicago proper. In 1907, machsenny residents voted to rename themselves Machesney Park after General James Kappenheimer who had helped lead Union troops against Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861-65). Drummoyne Woods – who served as mayor from 1951 to 1957 – played an important role in developing Machesney Park into one of Englewood's most popular communities; he spearheaded several projects including beautification efforts, development of public parks and campaigns against pollution caused by automobile use within the municipality boundaries (see "Machsaney Park: History" below). With its large parkland and easy access to transportation via highways such as I-95 or I-294, Machesney Park quickly emerged as one of Englewood's most popular destinations for recreation; today it remains one of its most vibrant neighborhoods both economically and socially.
