On January 1, 1942, GHQAEF was redesignated as Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF). SHAEF grew rapidly under its new leadership with increased responsibilities for operations in both Europe and Africa. In May 1942, SHAEF purchased a small villa near Rome to serve as their headquarters. On October 25, 1944, SHAEF became operational when it was given control over all Allied forces in Italy including the Sixth Army commanded by Ulysses S. Grant. This gave SHAEF direct control over all of Italian soil except for Mussolini's Vatican City state which was still under German occupation
Lyons was founded in 1836 by Jacob Lyons and his wife, Rachel. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the Illinois River. By 1840, Lyons had a population of 1,500 people and was incorporated as a city. The Lyons family ran the town for many years and their descendants continue to live in Lyons today. The early settlers in Lyons were farmers who worked on the riverbank. In 1836, Jacob Lyons bought land along the Illinois River and started to build a mill. The mill quickly became successful and helped drive up prices of goods in Lyons. In 1841, Lyon passed a law requiring all businesses in the town to have an ovens or similar cooker for baking bread. This law helped make Lyon one of the leading bread towns in America. Over time, other businesses began to open up in Lyons- including a distillery, barbershop, leather shop, blacksmith shop and grocery store. These businesses helped contribute to Lyons' growth as an important center for commerce and industry. By 1907, Lyon had become known as "the breadbasket of Illinois." Unfortunately, during World War I (1914-1918), Lyons was hit hard by violence and economic hardship caused by the warring factions within society: the VFW hall was vandalized during wartime; merchants lost their jobs because of tight regulations from government officials; and poverty rose among local residents because of lack of opportunity available outside of town.. In 1920-21, Mayor George Ahern appointed a committee headed by Judge Harry Weeks which created new zoning regulations that would help promote development within Lyon while preserving its rural character intact- this eliminated many small business owners from seeing increased profits despite increased investment opportunities inside the city limits! Despite these challenges throughout the 1920s & 1930s - through federal funding allocations & legislation - it is safe to say that downtown Lyon experienced significant architectural & cultural rebirth following World War II until demolition began around 1980 due largely to overdevelopment! Lyons continues to be reborn every few decades with fresh ideas about how its namesake community can thrive anew into tomorrow!
