Lyons grew rapidly due to its strategic location on two major waterways: the Rhône River and the Isère River. A number of prestigious hotels were built in Lyons during this time including The L’Oréal Company Building (now occupied by Pritzker Pavilion) which opened in 1892; The Hôtel de Ville (now headquarters of the City Hall); and The Lyonnais Armory (now home to several businesses). After Napoleon's return to power in 1815, he decided that Lyon would be his new capital since it had been one of his strongholds during his exile on Elba Island off Italy . He ordered construction of Palace Theatre which still stands today as one of Lyon's most emblematic landmarks.
