Lyons is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,634 at the 2010 census. Lyons is part of the Macomb–St. Clair County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Lyons were Quakers and others who came from Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. A mill was built on the current site of Lyons in 1827 by Welsh immigrants Hugh and Eleanor Davies. In 1838, Rev. John Moffett organized a church here and named it after his home state of Massachusetts. The village grew rapidly due to its location on the right bank of the Maumee River (now called Ottawa), which provided easy access to transportation and markets for goods brought downriver by steamboats or barges. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech from this spot promoting Cassville as an agricultural center because it had been "the scene of most important battles during our recent war." This event helped bring new life to Lyons and led to its rapid growth in population over subsequent years; by 1880, Lyons had more than 10% of the total population of McHenry County. Lyons remained a primarily agricultural community until after World War II when industry began arriving through migration from out-of-state towns such as Lansing and Traverse City; Lyon reached its peak production values during this time period but has since slowed down or stopped entirely there development due to competition from these new arrivals. Lyons is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 16,890 at the 2010 census. Lyons is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the border of Cook and Kane counties. The first European settlement in what is now Lyons was by French colonists led by Pierre Laclède in 1773. In 1809, Colonel John Fisk erected a cabin on the east side of present-day Lyon Boulevard and named it after General James Wilkinson's old home town of Kingston in Canada. A post office called "Lyon" was established at this location in 1820; it changed its name to "Lyons" in 1827 when Illinois became a state. In 1837, steamboatsman James Kapp brought cotton from Mobile Bay to Quincy along the Illinois River near Lyons Landing (now Rockford). The landing served as a wharf for transportation of goods upriver until 1840 when direct rail access arrived. That year, Congress authorized construction of the Erie Canal through Illinois and Lyon became one of five towns within ten miles (16 km) of its terminals to be designated as canal townships; this process began in 1840 and ended with the completion of the canal on Nov. 12, 1850. In 1861–1862, during American Civil War efforts to supply General Ulysses S Grant with munitions and other supplies from Missouri via Cincinnati through Illinois ports, an army column passed through Lyons on its way northward into northern Indiana; accounts vary regarding whether or not troops stopped at Lyon for food or drink before continuing their journey westward unimpeded. For many years following World War II there were significant military installations located within easy reach – including two airfields – but because land surrounds Lyons they have gradually been vacated or closed down as local industry has moved away: Lycoming Missile Factory closed down in 1984; First Tactical Air Command's 9th Air Force headquarters functioning out-of-state since 1993 relocated here permanently starting 2003; currently there are no active military installations within close proximity to Lyons other than those situated around Chicago proper which can be considered urban areas
Lyons was first settled in 1814 by Quakers. It was named for General James Lyons, an American general during the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1847, and by 1860 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1871, Lyons became the administrative center of Carroll County, Illinois.
