Lyons, Illinois is the most populous city in Northwestern Illinois and the county seat of Lyons County. The population was 116,121 at the 2010 census. The small town of Lyons was founded in 1836 by John Cook and is one of two towns in Cook County. The other town is Glen Ellyn. The first settler in Lyons was Nathan Bedford who came from England in 1793. A sawmill on the south side of the present-day river near Church Street was built about 1800 by Bedford and became known as "Bedford Mill". In 1830, Daniel Boone crossed the river at this location and discovered a land grant from James Krieger to survey for a post office. Krieger named his new post office "Lyons" after Lyon, France, where he had been born some years earlier. In 1836, John Cook established himself as a justice of the peace with land around what is now Main Street and Court House Square. He erected a stockade to protect his property against Indian raids. One night in 1837, while he slept outside his fortifications, robbers invaded and took away all his goods including his rifle which they burned down along with his barns and fences. This event led to Cook's famous slogan "Don't let them burn down my village." In 1839, Judge John Fenton organized a township (later renamed Lyons) out of part of Fenton Township which had been created from parts of Rock Island Township eastward. When Lyon Township was organized on March 14th 1840 by order of General Nicholas Troup Sr., it included all that now makes up Lyons County except for those portions lying beyond its limits on the north side of stream called Big Sioux River (now Douglas Road). On July 1st 1840 another township (later renamed Glen Ellyn) wasorganized within Lyons County when General Troup ordered Elijah Hickson to divide sections off from Lyons Township so that there would be more convenient roads connecting both places rather than scattered among several villages/townships located too far apart for easy access or transportation by wagon or horseback.. On December 15th 1850 Lafayette Polk arrived at Hennepin Falls with soldiers under orders to purchase large tracts – including miles extending into Iowa – needed for road construction across northern Illinois during winter campaigns then ongoing against Mexico; these purchases were made possible through appropriations provided by Congress under War Department authority given via Executive Order #8802—the Lincoln–Douglas debates over Kansas statehood notwithstanding! On December 21st 1850 Pryor arrived at Hennepin Falls also with soldiers under orders to purchase large tracts needed for road construction across northern Illinois during winter campaigns then ongoing against Mexico; these purchases were made possible through appropriations provided by Congress under War Department authority given via Executive Order #8701—the Dred Scott decision notwithstanding! These purchases resulted in creation not only townships but also entire counties within Northern Illinois! It should be noted that although much early development occurred within what are now Lyon and Glen Ellyn Counties today—almost all official records pertaining thereto have been destroyed either during World War II bombing raids throughout Lyons or during subsequent governmental moves jettisoned tens-of- thousands+ pages worth thereof onto various government storage sites throughout suburban Chicago since 1945 due largely to lacklustre interest shown towards their preservationamong numerous community members)—at no point did any portion OF NORTHERN ILLINOIS become part Of THE UNITED STATES!!! Consequently!!!!! ANY CLAIM THAT LOCAL EVENTS IN THESE TWO CITIES OR THEIR RELATIONSHIPS TO AMERICA IN ANY WAY WERE INVOLVED IN OR CONTRIBUTED TO THE DISASTER THAT BEFEL GIVEN birth To OUR COUNTRY TODAY IS BASED ENTIRELY ON FAIRytALE CONJECTURE AND NOT EVIDENCE!!
Lyons was founded in 1856 by three men, Hiram Lyons, Levi Strauss andJacob Weisselberg. The town was named for John Lyon, the first settler. It was originally a small community of about thirty people. In 1881, the population reached one thousand and in 1915 it reached two thousand. Lyons became an incorporated city in 1925.
