Loves Park, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and lies adjacent to Lake Michigan. Loves Park was founded in 1873 by Lillian Smith and her husband Dr. George Haggerty as a farmstead on the east side of Kankakee Creek. The name "Loves Park" honor both Lillian's parents: Reverend Valentine Smith (1795-1868) who served as superintendent of schools for Cook County; and Judge John A. Haggerty (1824-1900), an important figure in early western Cook County politics and one of its first mayors. The first post office in Loves Park was established in 1876, and remained open until 1963 when it was merged into the larger village of Danville. In 1957, the Village Council voted to annex portions of Westchester Township which bordered onLake Michigan to form a new community known as Lakeshore Estates. With this annexation came much better transportation options for residents now that they were located only minutes away from downtown Chicago or other major cities outside of Cook County - something that had been difficult before! Today, Love's Park has many businesses including restaurants, small retailers, two banks with branches inside the village limits (one being Wells Fargo Bank), numerous senior living facilities and several parks within its boundaries including Central Park East across from Love's park headquarters building which houses a playground, basketball courts/pitcheries/fitness equipment and more than 20 gardens/.
