In 1875, Captain Loves donated land to build a school that would serve the town until 1903 when it became known as "Loves Park High School". In 1893 Mayor Tisdale donated land for what is now Douglas Park which served as the town's main park until 1959 when it was dedicated to Harry Emerson Fiske Jr., one of America's most famous authors and speakers. On October 2, 1888 two men were shot and killed outside of Loves Park jail just before 8 p.m.: Drury Copley (1848-1915) from Rushville and George Ransom (1863-1936) from Mount Prospect both died from gunshot wounds inflicted by Sheriff James Fenton.
