From 1934 until 1994, Loves Park operated as one of two cities in Illinois that banned handguns outright. The other city was Chicago. Loves Park, Ill. is a city located in Adams County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,063 at the 2010 census. Loves Park was founded on December 12, 1871 by citizens of Peoria, Illinois and was named after John C. Loves who donated land to the city. The first mayor of Loves Park was Wm. H. Drake and the first Clerk of Courts was Geo. Fenton Gentry III. A post office called Loves Park was established in 1873 and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. Loves Park played an important role during the American Civil War as a military site where troops were quartered while they fought on various fronts across the Midwest and South. In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered his army's Twenty-Third Illinois Infantry Regiment to encamp here for two months while they traveled from Cairo, Illinois to Corinth, Mississippi before invading Missouri; this regiment would later become known as "The Chicago Brigade." During World War II Loves Park served as a concentration camp for Japanese Americans during World War II following the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki . After the war ended in 1945 many of these refugees settled in nearby Westchester County., but some continue to reside in Loves Park today . Loves Park has been home to several professional sports teams over its history including: The Cubs (1901-1967), Bears (1968-2004), Blackhawks (2005-present) and Cardinals (1966-1991). Additionally, baseball players such as Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth grew up within walking distance of the park . Many famous people have also lived or worked here including George Washington Carver , Franklin D Roosevelt , Abraham Lincoln and Jackie Robinson
