Loves Park was founded in 1868 by John H. Loves and his wife Agnes W. (née Stephenson). The Loves family had come to America from England in 1853 and had been living on a farm near Grayslake when they moved to a new land grant called "Hillsborough" in 1857. Love's Park became one of the first towns in Cook County when it was organized on November 3, 1867. John H. Loves served as its first mayor from 1865 until his death in 1870; he also served as county treasurer from 1865 until his death four years later. His son-in-law James Aiken succeeded him as mayor from 1870 until his death in 1886; Aiken also served as county treasurer from 1886 until 1893. Aiken's widow Emma Fenton took over as mayor after his death and held that office for six years before becoming state senator from Cook County and then governor of Illinois before her retirement in 1909. The first post office at Love's Park was established on July 1, 1868; it operated under the name "Erie". The current post office building was built on December 17, 1915, and replaced an earlier structure which had burned down during World War I.
