Lombard was founded on November 10, 1827 by Genesee Cass and his family as a station on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. In 1839, Lombard became the county seat of McHenry County. Lombard is named after Giovanni Battista Lombardi, an Italian general who served in World War II and the Korean War. Lombard is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), one of the largest universities in the United States. UIUC has campuses in Champaign andUrbana. The university also has two graduate schools: law school and medical school. The town also contains several small businesses including a bank, a grocery store, a gas station/convenience store, and several family-owned restaurants such as Pizza Hut and Chinese restaurant Pearl Palace BBQ & Wing House

Lombard is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lombard was platted on October 16, 1871 by George W. Lombard and his brother John L. Lombard. The name is Italian for "bridge over the stream." The first store in Lombard was built in 1875 by Hemanus Pohlman and Frank Morton. In 1902, Jules Kizer opened a grocery store on Main Street which became one of the most popular merchants in Lombard. Kizer's store remains open to this day as a business services center offering general merchandise and gifts to customers inside and outside the building. Lombard experienced some growth during World War II with several businesses opening up including J C Penney & Co.,the American Legion Post #1 (now Veterans Affairs Medical Center) and RCA Victor Corporation who manufactured radios, phonographs and other audio equipment for soldiers during World War II. After the war ended, many of these businesses closed down but one that continued operations until it closed its doors was Davenport Cigar Company which still operates today as a small business within Brown Deer's IGA supermarket chain located adjacent to Interstate 95 south of Lombardo Village Market Place shopping center
Lombard was founded in 1837 by George Lombard and his wife, Maria. The first post office in Lombard was established in 1843. In 1916, the city became a part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
