Lombard, Illinois is a small town in south central Illinois. The population was 9,462 at the 2000 census, making it the smallest community in the state of Illinois. In 1836, Lombard was founded by Italian immigrants as part of the Great Migration from that region. It has been called "the little Italy of America" because of its relative isolation from other Italian-speaking communities in North America. Lombard is named after Giovanni Lombardo, an Italian immigrant who settled in what is now Lombard County, Illinois in 1805. He purchased land east of Chicago on which he erected a log cabin and started a farm. From here he sold goods and services to other settlers and developed trade with nearby Missouri and Wisconsin. In 1825, Giovanni's son Lorenzo moved his family to present-day Lombard and began operating a grocery store. Lorenzo's descendants continued to operate the store until it closed in 1958. The Lombardi Family Museum opened in 1978 adjacent to the store site. In 1839, another Italian immigrant named Matteo bought land northeast of Lombard from John Cappuccio for $1 million dollars ($10 million today). This property became known as "The Prairie." Matteo built an extensive ranch there which included fields used for corn farming and grazing animals such as oxen, horses, cows, and pigs; some 7 miles (11 km) long by 2 miles (3 km) wide! Today several pieces of this early ranch still stand: including portions of the house where Matteo lived during his years as proprietor; parts of his barn; a significant portion of his windmill; and portions of two irrigation systems used to irrigate much of what is now Lombard County farmland! In 1846–47 two more Italians Names Enrico Fermi & Vincenzo Amaldi arrived at Elmira (now Elmira), NY while traveling through Canada on their way back home from Buffalo Niagara Falls! They met Anthony Comstock while en route (and ultimately became friends with him!). They decided to settle down near Buffalo so they could continue their business interests there but soon realized that they needed more space so they founded Amalgamated Copper Mining Company #2 on January 20th 1850 located just northwest/northwest corner lot 5 within 3 blocks or so & bounded by Broadway east/southwest corner lots 1-3 comprise today’s city limits
The community of Lombard, Illinois was founded in 1837 by John and Maria Lombardi. The Lombard post office was established in 1839, and the first store opened in 1840. In 1853, the town became a village, and in 1907 it became a city. In 1938, Lombard was named after Italy's most famous philosopher Giovanni Lombardo.
