The Lombard Rifle and Pistol Company was organized on December 3, 1875 in Lombard, Illinois. The company was chartered on January 7, 1876. The rifle and pistol roster for the first year included 5 officers and their families: Captain John D. Stephens; Lieutenant George W. Hinkels; Second Lieutenant Michael H. Kappelman; First Sergeant Charles L. Sweeny; and Corporal August Bowershaw. In 1877 the company purchased a carbine from the Cook County Alarm Company of Chicago which they used until 1889 when they replaced it with a muzzleloader rifle that became known as the "Lombard Gatling Gun." On September 9, 1886, Captain Stephens died suddenly at his home in Lombard while serving as captain of the company during an exhibition game against a team from Decatur, Illinois at County Stadium in Lombard. He was 47 years old. His death plunged the company into chaos as no one knew who would assume his role as captain next or how to continue operations under new leadership. On October 2nd, Second Lieutenant Hinkels took command of the company effective immediately and continued to lead it until his retirement on July 1st 1907 aged 49 years old after 10 years service with the company (2nd lieutenant-general rank).Lieutenant Kappelman served successively from 1888 to 1889 (acting lieutenant), 1890-1892 (second lieutenant), 1893-1895 (first lieutenant), 1896-1901 (captain) before becoming acting second lieutenant general on July 1st 1897 Captains Michael H Kappelman 1899-1901 & Charles L Sweeny 1901-1907 had no children born to them so they also assumed command of these units upon their fathers' retirement Captain John D Stephens's widow Mrs Stephens started her own rifle range in what is now called "The Colonel's Rifle Range" behind her house still carrying her late husband's rifles
