Lombard, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lombard was founded by Italian Americans in 1847 as a community on the east side of Chicago. In 1865, it became a city and has sincegrown into one of the most diverse and affluent communities in Chicagoland. In 2014, Lombard became one of only four cities to be awarded "Best Place to Live" by Forbes magazine. The award honored Lombard for its quality of life, economy and environment. The name "Lombard" comes from Italian for "bridge over the stream." Lombardy lies along the right bank of the Des Plaines River between Cook County on the north and Kane County on the south; it shares borders with Rockford to its west and Peoria to its east. The original inhabitants were Italians who had come to America during 1847-48 as part of what was known as La misura delle città (the measurement of cities). They built their homes around two churches: St Anthony's Catholic Church on North Avenue and St Joseph Catholic Church on East Boulevard. Over time several other religious congregations joined these two faiths: First Congregational Presbyterian (later United Presbyterian) church opened in 1870; Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox church opened in 1872; All Souls Episcopal church was founded in 1906; Methodist Episcopal church first opened in 1898; Lutheran services were held at Our Lady's Convent until 1956 when they moved into new buildings on West Adams Street. In 1860 there were just ten families living here; within twenty five years there were over 2000 residents consisting mostly of Italian Americans who had arrived during or after World War II seeking opportunities that would not be available back home due to wartime restrictions placed upon Italy by both dictatorial regimes – Mussolini’s Fascism compared favorably with that under Lenin’s Stalinism – and international pressure brought about by growing industrialization throughout much of Europe which led directly onto American soil via immigration from southern Italy especially throughout those years leading up to 1959 when America gained control over her entry into World War II through Congressional acts passed following Pearl Harbor Attack - all while other western European countries still faced prohibitionists/communists/Nazis running their systems unchecked! Consequently these immigrants helped create an entrepreneurial society characterized hereafter herein as “The Great Migration” fferent waves started moving across state lines starting with men coming already fluent speakers from rural areas such as Terre Haute (Indiana), Gold Coast ( Queensland Australia ), Buffalo Niagara Falls ( New York )…. continuingulsomely across oceans spreading values scientific knowledge technical advances helpful trades new technologies……….. eventually assimilating themselves culturally speaking more so than adopting American institutions thereby creating today’s unique community culture grounded originally not only physically but also ideologically & emotionally withinItalianAmerican identity & memory
Lombard was founded in 1818 by John Lombard and his wife, Nancy. The city was named in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant, who had recently been elected President of the United States. Lombard became a thriving cotton town and attracted many people from nearby cities such as Chicago and Indianapolis. The city's population reached 10,000 by 1830. By 1870, Lombard had become a major manufacturing center with businesses such as flour mills, sawmills, breweries and Factories No. 1 & 2 producing goods for the Illinois market. In the late 19th century, Lombard experienced rapid growth due to its position as a transportation hub on the Great Western Railroad and its access to markets in eastern Iowa and Minnesota. However, during World War I (1914-1918), Lombard suffered significant damage from bombing raids by the German Air Force; this caused some local businesses to close their doors until the war ended. From 1920 until 1990, Lombard remained an agricultural community with small-scale farmers retains much of its cultural heritage today including traditional cornhusking contests and hog roasting festivals
