The history of Lombard begins with two brothers who settled there in 1847: Giovanni (George) Lombardi and his brother Pietro (Filippo). George had emigrated from Italy during the first half of the 19th century and arrived in America as a teenager. He began farming land near what is now Lombard before moving on to purchase more land where he founded a successful flour milling business that thrived for many years. Eventually, George built a house on what is now Canal Street which he used as his home until his death in 1903. His son Giovanni took over running their father's business until him too passed away in 1916. Giovanni's widow Vincenza moved into her husband's old mill building after her husband's death and continued running it until her own death in 1951. She bequeathed much of her property including most notably their millsite to the city government which operates them today as cultural center/museum complex called "Giovanni Vincenzoni House". Meanwhile, another family – Lorenzo and Teresina Cugno – purchased lands east of downtown Lombardy from Giovanni’s descendants less than two years after its incorporation into the city limits due to lack of available real estate elsewhere within town limits at that time! They also started farming there and soon developed significant holdings across several blocks including portions now occupied by present day Canal St., Irving Park Rd., Dearborn Ave., Wacker Dr., State St./Lake Shore Dr./Freeman Rd., Elmhurst Ave./Ely Rd.–in addition to developing heavily forested tracts along both banks of Des Plaines River just upstream from where modern-day Lombardy stands today! These holdings would come together eventually forming what are now Elmhurst Park & Ravenswood Farms LLC—a substantial parcel located immediately southwest corner Elmhurst Ave./Ely Rd.–between Roosevelt Road & Ravenswood Drive (@ 2030 W Burlington Dr.). The development process for this big block was gradual but steady over several decades starting with initial acquisition/ mapping/ surveying work done by City Engineer John Fenton supervised by then Mayor Michael Bilandusky; later refinement through public hearings attended by representatives from various civic organizations followed with construction bids awarded culminating with groundbreaking on July 15th 1957! All told, it took about 25 years for these contiguous parcels—now part OF Downtown ELBOURNE—to reach their current size thanks largely to hard work by individuals within each respective community! Lombard was founded in 1837 by George Lombard and his wife,Catharine. The town was named for George Lombard, an Illinois congressman who had represented the area in the United States Congress. The Lombards built a log cabin on a small stream near the present day intersection of State Route 6 and County Route 309. In 1841, they took out a mortgage to buy 2,000 acres of land near present day Bloomington. They began to fence their land and build houses. In 1852, they bought 8,000 more acres around Bloomington and Frankfort. They started to grow crops and raised livestock including cows and horses. By 1865, they had developed a flour mill and erected a sawmill. In 1871, they started to develop their corn crop with varieties such as sweet corn (maize) and yellow corn (corn).
