He left Lombard for unknown reasons in 1837 and did not return until 1840. In 1847, John Romea's son-in-law, Abraham Lincoln, moved to Lombard from Alton and became one of its first settlers. Abram Lincoln had landed on the site of present day Lombard after running away from his father's farm near Alton. In 1851, he married Anna Maria Fenton and settled here with her husband Lucius Morton (1814-1892). They had six children: Anna Maria (born 1850), Abraham Lincoln (born 1861), Lucretia (born 1865), Lillie (born 1870), Edwin Morton (born 1872) and Theodore Roosevelt Jr.]]]. From this large family came many notable citizens of Lombard including: Abraham Lincoln’s brother Edward Muhlenberg – who served as Governor of Illinois during both Mr. President’s terms; Levi Morton – who founded Centralia Steel Works; Annie Fenton – wife of Abram Lincoln; Milton Saperstein - co-founder of SunocoPhillips Inc.; Lafayette Hennigan - Mayor of Chicago from 1979 to 1985; Julius Caesar Salatin - owner/operator/manager/director/founderof Kansas City Star Newspapers ; Homer Cummings - member IUPAC since 1966 On October 20th 1904 George Washington Carver arrived at Moravia landing near Farmington Hills Michigan Territory Territory[1] following a seven week journey across country by wagon crossroads stagecoach from Quincy to Warsaw Pennsylvania via Kaskaskia county Indiana[2][3][4][5] carvers were then allowed access to all land within territorial boundaries subject to certain regulations which included paying an annual tax amounting to $3 per capita or 7%age assessed value whichever was greater Township limits were not subjected to these same regulations but were instead assigned based upon location as determined by surveyors.[6][7] There are no documentary evidence that George Washington Carver ever set foot in Lombartown nor did he visit any other part of what is now Hancock County while living there between September 17th 1886 when he purchased 5 acres east side road 2 miles northwest corner lot #27 property belonging to postmaster general Joseph Hickeybarger alias Grosse Pointe Bend Land Office for $427 paid cash also known as Grosse Pointe Bend Landing Site[8][9][10] however it has been suggested that Carver may have visited village during early years prior visits being documented further back such as 15 year old boy Wilfred Crouch diary entry dated November 1888 where Carver is recorded as stopping at “Lombardy Landing” along with Everett Dirks who owned place name meaning big bend ahead)[11],[12],[13],[14]]
