Lombard, Illinois is a small town in the far northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,711 as of the 2010 census. Lombard is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded by Italian immigrants in 1856 and named for Giovanni Lombardo, an explorer and cartographer who had visited the area in 1847. The first post office was established at Lombard in 1857, and the first school was built in 1861. The railroad reached Lombard in 1871 and began serving the community as early as 1870. In 1886, a dam was constructed on Grand River to power a sawmill; this caused significant flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses in Lombard during the late 19th century. In 1944, Lombard became one of only two communities (the other being Onalaska) to be awarded city rights by Governor John Maynard Keynes due to its strong economy and lack of services available outside of the town limits. In 1959, industrial production ended within a few miles of Lombard resulting in an increase in crime rates within that radius; this led to increased spending by residents on security measures such as CCTV cameras and armed guards. Since then, much development has occurred within close proximity to Lombard including several new high-rise buildings which have helped improve traffic flow through town center while also preserving some historic buildings from demolition or redevelopment along with adding more retail stores and restaurants over time
