Lombard is a city in Logan County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. Lombard is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The first people to live in Lombard were the Pekin Band of Pequot Indians. They migrated from central Massachusetts in 1675 and built their own village on the banks of the Sangamon River. The Pekins were removed by General James Wilkinson in 1795 and their village was burned down that same year. In 1817, Thomas Green moved his family from Pennsylvania to what is now Lombard Township on Sangamon River near what is now Springfield. He began cultivation of land he had purchased three years earlier and named it Greenville after himself and his father-in-law, Nathaniel Browning (1756–1824). In 1840, John Sargeant erected a small log cabin on Wright Street just north of present day McCormick Road for tenant farmers who leased land from him for growing corn and wheat. This structure became known as "Sargeant's House." After market days around 5 p.m., Sargeant would trade goods with customers outside his door until approximately 10 p.m., when he retired for the night with a winnowing fan or two before retiring again to sleep outdoors during summer nights when there was no heat available inside building rooms except during occasional thunderstorms which would cause windows to rattle loose panes throughout building) In 1851, Sargeant's son Amos bought out John Sargeant's share in the business; this led to Amos' purchase of all other shares within two years thereafter including that of his father-in-law Nathaniel Browning Jr.. In 1854 Charles Gage founded Gage Agricultural Company which operated a large number of stores across country selling produce such as eggs, meat, dairy products and flour along with general merchandise such as clothing, saddles and tools among others . During this time period many small businesses developed throughout America due largely to railroad construction making transportation easier then ever before allowing goods distributed nationwide quicker then ever before even reaching consumers' homes
