Lockport is a city in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,701 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Lockport were three men from New York City who came overland to this location in 1824. They named their new town after the lock on the river that they saw in a map. In 1868, General George Meigs decided to move his military forces westward and into Illinois due to financial problems with his east coast unit. On September 1, 1829, Lockport was founded as a town by two farmers, John W. and Samuel Davenport. It became a village on December 17 of that year. In 1841, the first post office was opened in Lockport. In 1865, the first school was built in what is now the core of the village. By 1870, there were over 100 residents in Lockport. The first railroad arrived in Lockport on November 3rd of that year with an express train from Chicago to Lockport Junction. The wooden bridge across the Illinois River was built in 1871 and operated by horse-drawn cars until it was replaced by a steel bridge in 1907.
