Lockport is a city in the United States. The population was 41,169 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest city in Illinois and the largest in Macomb County. The border of Lockport runs along Michigan Avenue and State Street, north to south; it also includes several blocks ofBroadway and Elmwood avenues, running east-west. The name Lockport is derived from an 1837 land grant to Nicholas Rogers by General James Wilkinson. Rogers had been a captain in Company H (now part of First Regiment) Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the War of 1812. He donated 2,000 acres (8 km2) of his land grant to the town for what would become its core area. The first residents arrived around 1800 when Jonas Sacket founded a trading post on what is now North Broadway near present day Canal Street. Sacket's son Amos moved his family to Lockport from Maycomb County, Alabama after that county became part of Tennessee during the American Civil War because he could not find property there willing to sell him land concessions given under Federal supervision as part of Reconstruction policy following that war. Amos’s brother Eli bought him out and continued operations as an entrepreneur at his trading post until 1872 when he sold all but one acre (3 km2) to John Fenton who organized what would become known as Fenton's Mercantile Institution which still operates today as a downtown business district with over 50 stores including Sears & Roebuck, JCPenney & Co., Macy's Inc., Waldenbooks Inc., Target Corporation, Menards Inc., Belk Stores Incorporated and Publix Super Markets LLC among others). Development began soon after Fenton's purchase with two men named Philip Baird and Elijah Bickman acquiring 1,500 acres (6 km2) adjoining Fenton's lands for $20 per acre ($1/ha). This original development included only three houses: Baird’s House on South Main Street; Bickman’s Residence on West Dearborn Street; and George Stephenson’s Log House on North Morse Avenue which served as lockup for local criminals until it was destroyed by fire in 1863 while Stephenson was incarcerated at Knox County Jail awaiting trial on charges related to treason against Ulysses S Grant.
