It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Elgin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lockport" comes from the French word lock (a bolt or fastener) and port (a harbor). The first permanent settler in what is now Lockport was George Washington Carver who arrived in 1847. He founded a farm named Carver's Garden on what is now US-31 near present day Union Station. In 1856, John Fenton came to Lockport and organized a cooperative grocery store called Fenton's Store and Grocery Company with his brother Amos Fenton. The first building at 5th & State Streets still stands today as the headquarters for Community First Bank which opened in 1957. In 1865, James Jukes moved to Lockport from West Des Moines and started the first grocery store here - Jukes' Grocery Store. This store remain open until it closed in 1978 due to financial difficulties unification of several local grocery stores into one chain by that time resulted in higher prices for consumers and loss of business for Jukes himself as well as lead poisoning problems among his employees.. In 1902 William Hoehn erected a two story brick warehouse on State Street which served as an early shipping center for goods destined for Lockport Harbor on Lake Michigan inside present day Ford Park Cemetery acrossing street from Hoeshn's Warehouse - this became known locally as "Hoehn's Landing". From here goods were shipped downriver to Chicago via steamboats then ferries coming upriver before being delivered to residents on shore with pickers loading them onto wagons hauled by oxen pulling carts drawn by horses or buggies
