Lockport is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 79,254 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Lockport River and straddles the border of Cook and McHenry counties. It is named after Major General John Lockwood (1763-1846), who served as commander of Fort Dearborn during the War of 1812. The first settlers to what is now Lockport arrived in 1795 from Connecticut. By 1800, there were about 50 people living in what is now Lockport. The townsite was platted in 1802 by Captain Cornelius Dickey and his brother Amos Dickey. They named it for John Lockwood—the commander of Fort Dearborn at the time—who had helped lead the American forces against British forces during the War of 1812. In 1814, George Stephenson built a steamboat navigation channel through the lock on the river that facilitated trade between Chicago and Lockport. This made farming easier as farmers could bring their goods upriver to be sold or traded with local traders before they reached town center. By 1840, many businesses had been established inside what is now downtown Lockport including grist mills, sawmills, tanning sheds, breweries and other manufacturing businesses that continued until 1870 when railroad construction began making it possible for goods to reach larger markets statewide. This also led to an increase in employment opportunities for locals which has helped drive local economic growth over recent decades. During World War IIlockPORT became one of several U S ports used by allied forces seeking supplies abroad following Pearl Harbor Attack on December 7th 1941 which caused Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor resulting in America entering into World War II against Japan..lockPORT remained open until 1946 when it reverted back to Japanese control effective January 1st 1945..
