Lockport is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Kane County. The village of Lockport is located within the town limits. The first settlers to Lockport were farmers who arrived from New England in 1795. In 1814, Colonel Amos Kendall founded what became Kendallville, Illinois on a tract of land that he purchased from the Lenape people. He named his new community after John Lockyer, an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the State House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. In 1823 John Fenton replaced Kendall as Mayor and served until his death in 1827. In 1846, George Stephenson built him locomotive factory at Lockport which continues to be one of America's largest manufacturers of locomotives and other railway equipment today. The town's economy changed significantly during World War II as thousands of soldiers moved into the area; many factories were built in Lockport thanks to this influx of workers. After World War II,Lockport experienced decline due to changes in its local economy; however, it has since recovered and is now one of its most vibrant communities.
