During this time, local mill owners amalgamated to form International Paper Corporation with its own mills; however, paper production declined until Midwestern Electric Corporation bought IPC's assets in 1984 and resumed operations at its original location near downtown Lockport. In recent years much focus has been placed on tourism: lockportskytheparksandresorts has emerged as a major industry providing visitor attractions such as an amusement park, outdoor waterpark and hotel; while restaurants have drawn attention for their innovative cuisine or waterfront views overlooking Lake Michigan. Locksport was founded in 1843 by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. as a small town located in northwestern Illinois.
