It is also the most populous city in Champaign County. The first European settler in what is now Lockport was Nicholas Matteucci, who arrived on October 12, 1824 from Rome with his family. He erected a log cabin on an east-west street that has since been renamed Matteucci Drive in his memory. In 1830, John J. Reynolds built a brick house on the same spot and became one of the earliest residents of Lockport. In 1835, Nathaniel Sieving moved from Geneva, Switzerland to this area and founded the first mill in what is now Lockport. That year he also erected a house on what is now Matteucci Drive for himself and his family.
