Lockport is a city in the southwestern corner of Illinois, United States. The population was 116,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Lockport was George Stephenson in 1814 and he named it after his birthplace, Liverpool, England. In 1835, John Stephenson founded two companies to provide munitions for the American Civil War; one called Stephenson's Arsenal and the other called Union Armory. These companies were merged into Stephensons Arms Incorporated in 1881. In 1847, Amos Kendall bought land on which he built a sawmill and grist mill which became Kendall & Hennepin flour mills. The first post office was established at Lockport on February 14, 1850. By 1860, there were 21 businesses active in town with a combined payroll of $1 million annually. In 1865, Lockport had a population of 10 thousand people when it was incorporated as a village under the name of "New Lockport". On November 1st 1870 (the day before Thanksgiving), New LockPORT became an independent city by vote of its residents via ballot referendum following years of lobbying from Mayor Tilton Waddell and City Council members Edwin Sengel and Thos Kappes Sr.. The new city limits stretched from Indiana Avenue south to State Street east and west to Randall Road northward including most of Isabella County including numerous small hamlets that clustered around state trunk roads running through their towns- such as Southlock (now unincorporated), Northlock (now unincorporated), ect-. Lockport is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,395 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McLean County. The name Lockport comes from the French words " lock " meaning " gate" and " port " meaning " harbor." The first settlers in what is today Lockport arrived in 1827 as part of the great migration of Americans that began to occur during the mid-19th century. By 1840, there were over 100 families living in what became Lockport. The initial growth and development of the town was due to its location on the Chicago & Western Railroad (C&W) and its access to grain storage facilities along the river. This railroad allowed for heavy trade with farmers throughout central Illinois; this also led to extensive construction of roads and infrastructure within Lockport itself which helped house both local businesses and commuters alike. Despite this economic prosperity, however, infectious diseases such as smallpox and tuberculosis took hold early in Lockport's history and quickly killed many residents - including some who had made substantial investments in their community. In 1865, Eastern Illinois College (now Eastern Illinois University) was founded in present-day Carbondale by a group of businessmen who saw an opportunity to create a university near one of their country's growing industrial centers.
