A group of men from Decatur Township led by Nicholas Matteson built a log cabin on what is now Maple Street about 1830. They named their home "Matteson's Mills". Armour & Co.'s products included rifles, shotguns, pistols and cannons; it became one of the most powerful businesses in early Illinois. In 1847 John Wessels purchased much of Armour & Co.'s interest in what would become Wessels Electric Company which continued operations until 1984 as part of Dynegy Incorporated today (). In 1874 George Cleveland formed a company that became General Electric (); this company eventually merged with Westinghouse Electric Corporation to form GEICO Holdings LLC on January 1st, 2019 (). The first school opened in Lockport on September 11th, 1865 when Miss Alice Lasky taught a class at her parents’ house while they awaited passage through New York City for their infant daughter Julie () then age 4 months old (). Mrs Lasky paid for additional students with money she had saved up since she left Ohio for Indiana as a young woman (). This school operated until 1904 when it merged into Griggs Academy which continues operation today as Lockport Academy High School (). lockPORT also has its own golf course
Lockport was founded in 1848 by John Lock and his wife, Martha. The town originally consisted of a few homes and a mill. Over time, the town grew and developed into a small city with over 100 businesses. In 1975, the city merged with neighboring village of Portage to form the current Lockport City government.
