Lisle is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. Lisle is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the north side of the River Des Plaines and adjoining suburban communities of Elmhurst, Addison, and Romeoville. The first European settlers in Lisle were Swedish farmers who arrived in 1772 as part of a fur-trading expedition under Axel Oxenstierna. They built a small log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river and developed a farming industry which grew steadily until 1837 when canal construction along the river cut off access to land for development. When Lisle became an incorporated village in 1857, it had only 3 families living there; by 1900 it had over 100 residents. In 1930, agricultural production peaked with 1,829 acres (730 hectares) being grown; however, during World War II most production shifted to munitions manufacturing due to strategic bombing raids against Berlin and Japan. After 1945 Lisle slowly regained its lost commerce as services began to grow; today much of its economy revolves around technological innovation such as information technology and alternative energy sources. Lisle's rich history has been memorialized through several museums including the Museum of American History and the University Museum which are both located within walking distance of each other on Elmhurst Avenue between State Street and Roosevelt Road. The Village Green contains an interesting collection of early 19th century architecture from Lisle including two Federal buildings dating back to this time: One was converted into private housing after General Sherman's raid on Chicago in 1871; another was used as military hospital during World War I before being purchased by local officials and reopened as a museum in 1933 featuring original equipment from that war.
