Lisle's history can be traced back to 1818 when John Lisle founded a small settlement on land that he had purchased from the Indians. In 1824, John's grandson, Isaac Lisle, took over ownership of what would become Lisle. In 1836, Abraham Lincoln was elected president and moved his family to Lisle to live while he was campaigning. Mrs. Lincoln later said that living near Chicago made it more difficult for her to get around town so she decided to move back to Lisle permanently and commute by train intoChicago each day. Mr. Lincoln never lived in Lisle again but left behind a lasting legacy - an art museum which opened its doors in 1893 and now hosts more than 2,000 pieces of American art from across generations The early days of agricultural production were tough for farmers who needed lots of sunlight for their crops but enough shade for their animals (due to forests then present). Lisle is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by Park Ridge to the north, Downers Grove to the east, and Will County to the south. Lisle was first settled in 1836 as a trading post on the west bank of the river by fur traders from Canada and British Columbia. In 1847, Lisle became a city when it was incorporated as an independent city under territorial government. It grew rapidly during World War I until its boundaries were lowered in 1920 due to federal land acquisition; Lisle now occupies portions of both Downers Grove and Park Ridge neighborhoods. Lisle's rich history can be traced back to its earliest days as a trading post on the river banks. The fur trade played an important role in early Lisle development and provided many jobs for local residents; some early people who lived here are still remembered today such as Isaac Asimov and Fannie Lou Hamer. In 1836, traders from Canada and British Columbia founded what would become known as "The Western Fur Company" at what is now downtown Lisle; this company facilitated trade between North America and Europe through their posts along The Great Lakes region. Over time, other companies followed suit including The United States Fur Company (USFCo) which established operations in 1851 before merging with The Hudson Bay Company in 1870 In 1840-1841 USFCo built Fort Dearborn warehouse on current day Wabash Avenue; this fort served as headquarters for USFCo activities along The Great Lakes region until it was destroyed by fire in 1865 For years afterwards it was believed that one of two cannons found inside Fort Dearborn were responsible for starting that fire however recent research has shown that they were not actually used within that time frame In 1846-1847 USFCo built a brick warehouse at State Street which served as office & storage facility for USFCo activity along The Great Lakes region until it burned down in 1865; this building still stands today behind present day Daley Plaza housing development . Today part of State Street forms home to Lisle's original waterworks system which operated from 1793 until 1862 . In addition to their office & storage facilities, these businesses also produced goods such as textiles , shoes & leather products etc.; also exported foodstuffs such as maize meal & potatoes into North America . This lead directly to many local families becoming well-known personalities within their fields includingIsaac Asimov, Fannie Lou Hamer etc.. During World War I (1914-1918), large quantities of munitions were stockpiled at "The Western Warehouse" acrossthe river opposite where present day Union Station sits; these stocks helped contribute significantly towards American victory over Central Powers troops during WWI .. A few notable locals who took part in WWI include Chief Justice John Marshall Harlan Jr., Mayor Raymond Burke etc.. Afterward much smaller numbers returned home but continued business operation went on right up until 1991 when all traces thereof ended… However there are numerous Pioneer Day events annually held throughout town honoring those who have made an impact locally or nationally during our colorful history!
