Lisle is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lisle is the site of two universities: Northern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The town was founded by Levi Lincoln in 1839 as a cattle Station on the south side of the Chicago River. In 1851, Lisle became a city when it was annexed by Chicago; however, it reverted to its original status as a village until 1957. On December 1, 1987, Lisle became one of 50 communities in Cook County to become an " incorporated village" under state law No. 4362 (theVillage Incorporation Act). Lisle's name comes from "Liskeard". A post office called Liskeard was established in 1835, and remained in operation until 1963. The first settler in Lisle was Isaac Wiseman; he arrived there with his family in 1838 and built a log cabin on what is now State Street. Wiseman operated a sawmill for several years before purchasing land along present-day Ottawa Street to build his own farmstead known as "Wiseman's Prairie." He raised corn and other crops before selling his land to John André for $1 per acre ($ /acre). André donated much of his farmland to form the current campus of Northern Illinois University (NIU) which opened its doors on October 24th, 1893. NUI has since grown into one of America's largest university systems with campuses across 26 states and over 200 colleges and universities‎ - totaling nearly $43 billion‎ - ‎in 2016‎! In 1906- 1907 Aurora Wertheim started building Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company at what is now NIU’s Pritzker Pavilion on North Clark Drive near Griggs Road – that company later merged with American Surety Corporation to become American International Group (AIG)‎ - ‎the first insurance company west of the Mississippi River! Aurora Wertheim also founded Tinicum Park Golf Course nearby on Tinicum Park Road – that course remains open today as Central Michigan University’s Old Course! It wasn't long before businesses began opening up around town – some still standing today including Bissell Machine Shop which still operates today from Elmhurst Avenue just east of I-94; Horseshoe Casino & Hotel from Whatley Avenue east downstate just north of US Highway 20; Saloon/ diner known locally as 'The Grapes' located off Main Street between Elmhurst Ave & Washington Blvd.; Fenton Drugs starting out as simply Fenton Drug Store but quickly developing into one of downtown Lisle's most popular attractions hosting live music often throughout summer months nightly inside or outdoors... In 1925 Jens Jensen opened up his own grocery store next door to Fenton Drugs becoming perhaps oneofLisle's earliest successful businesses...Jensen would continue running this business until 1984 when he sold it too to buyout his partner

In 1830 John Crouch established a post office at what is now Lisle under the name of Crystal City because he could not find anyone with whom to send goods overland to Chicago due to the Great Western Railroad's construction across Iowa Territory that year. In 1847 Michael Reese founded a sawmill at what is now Lisle as part of his plan to establish new cotton plantations in central Illinois using slave labor during times when slavery was legal in many states including Illinois Michael Reese also laid out much of today’s downtown area including parts of State Street which are still known as Reese Avenue after him In 1849 Jesse James destroyed several miles (km) worth of trackage belonging tothe Great Western Railroad just east of Crystal City so he could build an open-air railroad depot there for himself restrictions on railroad building were lifted by then President Franklin D Roosevelt following James'gallantry while robbing trains near Hometown Lake near Peoria on August 29, 1944 After years spent being bypassed by other transportation providers such as roadways and rivers they were finally completedand became operationalon October 15th 1854 when steamboats arrived at CrystalCity Pierheadto load passengers with coal for Jaffrey & Guthrie ironworks four miles upstream
