The town of Lisle, Illinois was founded in 1801 by the brothers Francis and David Logan. The town rapidly became a center for agriculture, commerce, and education. In the 1860s, the town was the site of a major battle between Union forces and Confederate troops. In 1871, Lisle became a city.
Lisle is a small town in southwestern Illinois, located on the Sangamon River. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. Lisle is one of eight towns in Kane County and is bordered by Carbondale to the northwest, Peoria to the northeast, Rockford to the southeast, andNormal to the southwest. Lisle's ZIP code is 61622. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lisle were French traders who journeyed up the Sangamon River in 1671. Dutchman Peter Boelen issued a patent for land east of present-day Carbondale in 1686. known as "the Purchase", this grant included some of what are now Lisle and Normal Township. In 1794, John George Stephenson built a flour mill on his Stephenson place near present-day Carbondale which became one of Illinois' early industrial centers. The starch industry soon followed; lube oil was discovered here in 1846 and various other products from this region began being exported during the late 19th century. In 1912, when Kane County was created from parts of Cook County, Lisle became its administrative center. It remained that way until 1959 when it was renamed after General William Tecumseh Sherman thanks to contributions from local businesses and citizens alike. In 1977–1978, much effort was made by then-Mayor Dick Sears (D) to bring attention to an issue facing residents: high water levels resulting from heavy rains upstream caused extensive flooding throughout central Kane County; nearly all homes were lost or ruined as a result of damage wrought by rising waters backed by unprecedented snowfall in December 1976; some areas had become so unstable that they necessary explosives be detonated under large boulders just feet away from homes after residents reported spotting moving objects among nearby trees dueto subsidence); Sears ordered demolition of most low-lying homes within his jurisdiction as part of coordinated government response dubbed Operation Floodplain Fuelling; following community meetings held throughout Kane County with input from affected homeowners/landownership holders/planners/, an ordinance providing for condemnation proceedings against any owner found guilty of negligence or abandonment under circumstances where such action would have resulted in loss or destruction not onlyof home but also adjacent landwas passed by City Council on January 9 1978 This event helped spur development efforts throughout Kane County which today include numerous shopping malls (including Kmart), professional sports stadiums ( including Wrigley Field), new housing developments (including Century Village), two major highways - I-270 and I-55 - three colleges (Illinois State University – Champaign & Northwestern University – Urbana & DePaul University – Chicago), many auto dealerships and numerous other businesses associated with modern day Kane County . Lisle is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,480 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lisle was founded in 1853 by John and Anna Lisle as a market town for the Eden Prairie Township. In 1870, it became part of the Village of Lisle and then the Town of Lisle in 1895. The current name first appeared on a map dated 1889 and was given to the community by trustees who purchased 1/8 acre (0.3 km²) plot of land east of what is now First Avenue and West Seventh Street from David Sayers (1796-1875). On November 12, 1907, $5,000 were raised to purchase property north of First Avenue between West Seventh Street and Park Avenue; this parcel became known as "The Gables". Lisle's history can be traced back to 1853 when John and Anna Lisle decided to establish an agricultural community near Eden Prairie after purchasing 10 acres (4 ha) adjoining their home on Lake Michigan shoreline. In 1870, they added 4 more acres (14 ha), making it into the Village of Lisle which they renamed in 1895 when they incorporated as a town under Article XVIII Section 3 Of the County charter. At that time there were only 350 residents living within our limits! The first post office opened in 1865 with three employees serving six days per week! Our citizens have always been proudto call themselves "Lisians" or simply "Residents." In 1907 we increased our size yet again when we acquired 2 ½ acres adjacent to Noor’s Ford Road for $10 thousand dollars! We developed this property into what we know today - our Present day Town Hall complex! This beautiful structure still stands today providing excellent public meeting space for all your civic needs! Furthermore, through gracious donations from many individuals over time this building has also become home to various other municipal departments including Fire Dept., Police Dept., Library & Parks Department among others! Our municipality has grown immensely over these many years resulting in numerous annexations along with Waterford Woods neighboring municipalities just south & west of us all!!! As you can see - it's always been county wide but never too big or too small for us Lisians!!!
