Lisle is a small village in the far northwestern corner of Illinois, across the state line from Iowa. It was founded in 1847 by two surveyors, Lewis and Clark McDonald, as an outpost on the Kansas-Nebraska border. Lisle soon became a center of wagon traffic and trade between Missouri and Illinois. The town's first post office was established in 1851. Lisle experienced some growth during the late 19th century when it became home to several large manufacturing plants such as the Phelps Dodge Company and J.P. Morgan & Co.. However, Lisle's fortunes declined after World War I due to increased competition from larger towns in nearby states. In the 1920s and 1930s, Lisle began to experience significant population loss due to rural exodus to areas with more opportunities for economic development.
