Lisle is the county seat of Cook County and home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It lies on the east bank of the Chicago River. The first people to live in Lisle were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near the current site of Lisle by lying down in soft earth around small streams that flowed through their land. The area now known as Lisle was settled by white men after a survey team led by Captain George Washington explored what is now Cook County in 1795. George Washington's party traveled north from Philadelphia along present-day Route 3 to what is now Lisle and called it Mount Prospect (now part of downtown Chicago). In 1812, General Andrew Jackson invaded Canada and drove the British out of what is today Illinois; while he was there, he founded Fort Dearborn (later Jefferson Park) on an bluff overlooking the river near modern day Lisle. In 1837, James K. Polk became President of America and decided to move his presidential palace from New York City to Nashville, Tennessee because he thought it would be more convenient for him to travel than go through Philadelphia each time he visited that city during his term as President. Polk's decision not only created a political issue because Nashville had no anti-slavery laws but also increased tensions between America's two largest cities which had been neighbors for centuries until then In 1848 John Crain became Mayor of Chicago after being elected as one of two members from Cook County on November 4th over Republican nominee Henry Clay Frick with 53% against 45%. On January 1st1849 City fathers passed an ordinance creating an incorporated village within Cook County called "Lisle" after Captain George Washington's original Landing Site on the east bank of Chicago River in honorof His Lieutenants Commander William Hickeyand Christopher Hickey who landed with Captains Pierre Rochefort and Samuel Lafitte at La Vallee rouge about 2 miles upstream from modern day Fosterville on October 24th 1800 during French War For Independence under American Flag when they assisted French Forces Under Admiral Marquette To Protect Our Coast From Spanish Invasion

It was founded in 1848 by members of the Methodist Church as a small town named after John Lisle, an early settler in what would become Kane County. The first post office was founded in 1851. In 1865, Lisle became the county seat of Kane County and remained so until 1971 when it was moved to Rock Island. Lisle's rich history includes two events that helped spur economic development in this area: The first occurred when Judge James Prentice built his sawmill on the banks of the La Salle River just north of town; and second occurred when Fayetteville Township (now part of Aurora) merged with Lisle in 1881 to form one large municipality (the largest ever created within Kane County). The wide variety of industries that have thrived here over time include manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, and retailing - all while remaining close to downtown businesses and services. Today, many businesses continue to locate here because there are plenty of opportunities for growth both within and outside of Kane County without leaving Lisle – something that has contributed significantly to its continuing vitality as a community.
