They built a cabin on what is now Elm Street near Church Street. In 1822 Amos Kendall married Sarah Clearwater and they moved to their present location where they built the first home on what became Elm Street. In 1830 they bought an additional parcel of land which added to their current lot size for $1,500 cash. The early Lisle settlers were farmers who raised corn, wheat and beans according to local custom then exported these goods to markets around the country before coming home during summer months to tend their crops. In 1841 Abraham Lincoln visited Lisle while he was campaigning for president; he used its market place as an audience hall while giving speeches in nearby Carbondale andNormal Illinois Abram Kincaid also visited Lisle in 1841 while serving as Lieutenant Governor of Illinois under John Quincy Adams; he noted that "the people are justly proud of their old town." The first school opened in October 1842 by Reverend Joseph Terhune with 10 students including Miss Sophia Bemis from Winnetka Heights School District #4 whose father served as Superintendent of Schools for Cook County until his death two years later at age 27%. Mrs Mary Shurtleff taught music from 1850-1857 at Shaw Academy which locals called "the harpsichord school" due to its popularity among students there For many years afterwards high school classes were held Monday through Friday evening after business hours at the Masonic Hall located on North Main Street across from Lake Michigan Railroad station which still serves as a restaurant today
