In 1925, the first electronic scope was purchased by the United States government and it was used for science research. By 1938, all of the Town's scopes had been replaced with electronic ones. By 1948, all of the Town's telescopes had been replaced with digital ones as well. By 1957, all of the scopes in Lindenhurst were digitalized as well. Lindenhurst was founded in 1871 by George W. McDonald as a small town on the banks of the Illinois River. The community rapidly grew, and in 1902 it incorporated as a city. Lindenhurst steadily developed into one of the leading communities in northern Illinois, becoming known for its quality schools, shopping opportunities, and civic institutions. In the 1940s, Lindenhurst suffered from wartime-related hardships, including inadequate housing and food supplies. However, the community rallied to rebuild and grow anew. In 1948, Lindenhurst became an official U.S. City of Science and Technology. In 1990, Lindenhurst was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its significant local cultural heritage.
Lindenhurst is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,691 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Cook County after Chicago. Lindenhurst was incorporated on November 3, 1868. The first settler of Lindenhurst was Amos Pond and his family. They were followed by other early settlers such as John Ladd, who erected a log cabin on the east side of present day Main Street in 1870; James Bicknell and his brother-in-law Henry Pemberton located a log cabin near where the current High School stands today in 1872; Hiram Griggs built a sawmill on the west side of present day State Road 20 in 1875; and Abram Sitch established an agricultural society with 160 acres (70 ha) of land around what is now Elmira College in 1877. In 1898, John Aiken opened the first post office here which remained open until 1954. In 1907–08, Aiken organized what would become known as "The Lindenhurst Band" which played at local dances for several years before disbanding due to financial difficulties. Lindenhurst became one of America's "rust belt" towns during the late 19th century because many manufacturing jobs left for cheaper places like Detroit or Cleveland after American industry lost its heyday during that time period. However, over time Lindenhurst has regained some of these lost jobs through diversification into new fields such as information technology and health care services. According to Forbes Magazine’s 2012 list of “America’s Most Diverse Towns”, Lindenhurst ranks #3 out of 158 municipalities surveyed for its mix of cultures and religions including Islam (1), Hinduism (2), Buddhism (2), Judaism (4), Christianity (8), atheism (1). By 1860, there were over 50 people living in Lindenhurst. The post office was established in 1859 and named after Colonel Augustus H. Lindenwald, who had been a friend of George Washington Carver and other early pioneers in DuPage County. Lindenhurst was originally ground zero for several important railroads that served the Chicago area: The Rockford Railroad (later part of the Union Pacific Railroad), which built a line from Carbondale to Lindenhurst; and the Peoria Railway (now known as Metra), which built a line from Peoria toLindenhurst. The railroad industry played an important role in shaping Lindenhrust’s history and economy during its early years; many residents worked on railway companies or related industries until they left for better opportunities elsewhere when technology advanced and transportation became more accessible. Many of the original buildings still stand today including Old Post Office, Store, Schoolhouse/Garage (now used as a business incubator) and Mrs Kapp's Dairy stable/farmstead Museum (which features exhibits about local dairy products). In addition to its historical attractions, Lindenhurst has also become home to several businesses that continue to contribute significant economic values to the community: Cargill Foods Inc., Home Depot, Sears Roebuck & Co., Wahl’s Hardware & More than 60 other local businesses make up what is now known as "the village". The Village of Lindenhurst was organized on December 15th, 1959 by then-Mayor John Fritsch with help from then-County Clerk Floyd Kapp Jr.. On January 1st 1960 all businesses within "the village" were required to join one common enterprise account under the name “Village Committee for Economic Development” with Drury Farms being one such company - this account continues to be active today as Village Hall Services LLC ().
