The museum is open to the public from 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday, and 9am to 3pm on Sundays. Lindenhurst was founded in 1871 by Isaac Lindenhurst and his wife Sarah. The town became a village in 1902, and then an incorporated town in 1903. The first post office opened in 1907, and the first school was built in 1909. By 1920, Lindenhurst had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1928, the Village of Lindenhurst merged with the Town of East Stroudsburg to form the present-day city of East Stroudsburg. Lindenhurst is located at 32°50′N 88°00′W (32.90422 N 88.3282 W). According to the 2010 census, its population was 26,844. It is included within the borough of East Stroudsburg Township which has a total population of 52,975 according to the 2010 census and is also part of Pittsburgh metropolitan area with a total population of 7 million people. The earliest known permanent settler in what is now Lindenhurst was Isaac Lindsey who arrived there from New York around 1795 A.D.. He built a log cabin on what is now Dogwood Road on land he had bought from Ephraim Chambers about three miles northeast of where he settled as early as 1792 A.D.. He soon traded goods with his neighbors for lumber used for building homes and other purposes near his new settlement.. In 1815 A D., John Sibley moved from Northampton County Pennsylvania into Alleghany Township (now Lebanon) County PA along withhis family including 5 children under age 10; 2 girls married while living at home “with their father” while their 4 brothers reared 12 children each before they all migrated eastward into Bucks County PA during that year pursuant to government guidelines providing for such migration ..... It appears that most early settlers were Quakers or Baptists who followed religious orders or denominations other than English Puritans who came mainly because they could not find land enough suitable for themselves without leaving their homes/countries…..By 1831 there were 6 families residing here according to US censuses…..Most likely when these families left they took items they could carry with them such as furniture & tools etc… With this move away from rural life back east many pioneers lost touch with friends & family back home……Many thus may never have heard about events happening further west until after death….. Many descendants still maintain close relationships w/friends & family back home today…. In 1847 Anders Olsen purchased 640 acres northwest of present day Lindenhurst from James Prentice…………This purchase allowed Olsen to build an additional two buildings on his property: one house & barn – both still standing today; second barn became farmstead & eventually apartments…………….Olsen’s purchase allowed him exclusive rights to sell hay on his property until 1850……………. Most farmers reached this point through connections made due costly transport times between eastern Pennsylvania Dutch farms located southcentral PA& west central Ohio caused by changes brought about by gold rush days……………. This process led directly to increased transportation costs (& lower prices paid) during this time period which contributed significantlyto overall economic decline throughout much northeastern Pennsylvania during this period…………………………James Prentice later claimed he did not realize how important it would be for Olsen to keep control over access to hay since he only sold it once per year……………. This claim does not reflect reality as Olsen held exclusive rights until 1850 even though he sold hay more frequently than that……As can be seen from Olson’s purchase deed it wasn't simply "the farmer" marketing hay but an exclusive privilege granted only unto him………….........This system perpetuated itself whereby eastern companies like Penn Central Railroad were able to buy up large tracts (~70%)of western Susquehanna Valley farmland leading directlyto economic stagnation throughout much northwestern Pennsylvania during this period…………………………That same decadesaw major progress being made regarding transportation.......Pennsylvania statehood finally resultedin 1863 when US territorywas acquired including western Susquehanna Valley……………………............With railroads available newly developed areas such as Armstrong Co., Westmoreland Co., Butler Co., Greene Co., Erie Co., downstate New York along Lake Erie began popping up…………………….....During these years influential people like Andrew Carnegie (& others) invested significant sums OF moneyinto developing new transportation systems which eventually ledto America's middle class becoming increasingly prosperous…………......Today many residents view aspectsof our history which occurred decades ago thru photos displayed inside local historical museums as nostalgicallywondering why things didn't happen sooner instead of feeling frustratedly clueless about why certain things happened despite nearly 200 years intervening
