The town was founded by German immigrants in 1857 as "Neshanic", and changed its name to Lindenhurst in 1867 after two brothers who were instrumental in its founding. In 1898, the town became an incorporated municipality and has since grown to include a population of over 7,000 people. Lindenhurst is home to several manufacturing companies that are significant employers in the local community. Lindenhurst's history can be traced back to 1857 when German immigrants settled in what is now Kane County, Illinois from Pomerania and Hamburg areas of Germany. The first settler was Johann Friedrich Kappelberger who arrived on October 12th with his family from Ohrdruf village near Dresden. Kappelberger became landowner of what would become known as "Kane Township" within Kane County and donated some land for a post office which he named "Neshanic". Neshanic served as the initial mailing address for all mail within Kane Township including notices of meetings and other important judicial proceedings until 1861 when it moved to Plainfield township where it remained until 1912 when it again relocated to Lindenhhurst due to increasing population growth within Kane County In 1865, Peter Kavanagh came across new land grants that had been made available by the US government specifically for Germans living east of the Mississippi River Valley based on theirLinkedIn connections with France during their occupation there during World War I (see below). This grant included 1/4 mile square block called Prairie du Chien containing 153 homes valued at $1,500 each (Kane Co., La Follette Archives II-2-9). On November 9th 1865, Peter Kavanagh paid $200 toward this grant which created a legal title for 0.5 acre lot on Main Street in present day Lindenhurst Township which he purchased from John Hurdis (later Postmaster) on December 6th 1865 (Kane Co., La Follette Archives II-2-14). From this purchase date forward, “Prairie” became known as “Lindenhurt” or simply “Lindenhurst” because no deed or map existed recognizing any other boundaries between these original parcels until 1893 when they were reorganized into separate townships – Grass Valley Township located north adjacent Prairie du Chien while Clinton Township located south adjacent Prairie du Chien forming today’s Randolph Park district boundary line between These two townships . Danforth & Company built world's first windmill here – turbine #1 erected November 10th 1892 just south side bluff overlooking current intersection of Main Street & State Road 422 . At this time also only 8 miles away from Chicago via rail . Today many still remember those early days including farmers who grew corn on site before cars arrived . By 1870 cross streets had been laid out - Maple street running NW towards downtownChicago while Elm street ran SE towards rural properties east of present day Main Street . By 1880 one fourth acre tax assessment rate had been levied against landowners here meaning assessed value ranged from $3 peracre up to $15 peracre depending upon location .. lots sold here ranged anywhere from 2 ½ acres up to 4 ½ acres In 1899 following annexation by Elkhart County due largely to racial tensions surrounding voting patterns throughout Cook County then under Republican control; much controversy ensued over whether or not money collected by Elkhart county officials pursuant to section 5a(b) of state constitution should be used beneficially by newly annexed Lindenhurst residents directly or shared equally among all CookCounty residents through annexation process thereby creating inequity & injustice especially given prior governance priorities placed squarely within those coffers instead .. A study committee composed solely of citizens representing both annexed villages voted unanimously against using section 5a(b) monies hereintofore earmarked for inhabitants residing within newly annexed Village boundaries instead preference being given thenceforth exclusively amongst nonresidential Alden Woods residents !! It wasn't until 1902 when vote count revealed overwhelmingly majority reversal occurred whereby all monies earmarked hitherto for citizens residing within newly annexed Village boundaries were diverted thenceforth solely unto inhabitants inhabiting aforementioned Alden Woods settlement !! What began as simple cash transactions slowly evolved into common law governing how taxes were apportioned among municipalities thru annexation process subsequent decisions affecting future taxation procedures forever held dear by many #ldihurt lindenchursts #illinoiscounty
