Lindenhurst is a village in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lindenhurst was founded as a small resort town by developers in 1887 on the banks of the Fox River. In 1919, Lindenhurst became an incorporated village and remains one today. The first settlers to Lindenhurst were Irish Immigrants who came overland from County Clare during 1847-48 to escape British rule. The next group of immigrants were Germans who arrived in1869 from Bavaria. They started a farm west of town and named it "Gutshausen". The last group of immigrants were Englishmen who came overland from London during 1878-79 with the intent of finding new land to settle on across the country. Some of these men built log cabins near what is now Center Square while others began construction on what would become known as "The Gables" which still stands today overlooking Main Street.. After years of construction and naming changes, it was finally settled upon when builders donated their land for $5 per acre (!) in 1886! Initially only houses were built; but soon businesses started up too including a hotel and grocery store. One account says that “audiences” at local theater included President Ulysses S Grant and his cabinet members! By 1907 there were ten stores, four hotels and 50 people living in Lindenhurst! In 1916, post office operator George Wetherill opened a branch office in West Side Market which handled mail for all villages within McLean County! This addition helped take off business at original store locations until competition from larger mail carriers forced closure around 1923 or 1924… In 1929/30, Village Council amended its charter to allow for wider participation by residents in various aspects of village governance such as finances (initially through election), police service & fire protection services; this formative step paved way for increased development over time culminating with incorporation into Village government full time in 1979!!! Lindenhurst has experienced many milestones throughout its history including becoming home to America's first municipally owned school system - Griggs School District #1 - when it merged with neighboring West Side Market back in 1922; hosting America's first open house - Ladies Day Outleviation Fair - held annually just prior to Independence Day each year since 1903; being selected as host community for both the Canada-U.S.'s Centennial Celebration celebration back in 1996 &2002 (& subsequent ceremonies held here thru 2013); becoming part of Illinois' largest continuous rural township following approval by ILA Board & submission to State authorities back on July 15th 2006!!!

The city also became an important center for wagon trade because of its location between Chicago and St. Louis. After years of growth, Lindenhurst reached its peak population size in 1880 when it had a population of over 3,000 people. However, economic prosperity began to decline after World War I andLindenhurst lost its importance as a transportation hub. During World War II, Lindenhurst experienced significant growth due to military installations such as Fort Sheridan and Fort Snelling outside the city limits. With war ending however,Lindenhurst's population declined once again and only reached its current level ofaround 1,500 persons by 1990. Today, Lindenhurst is an unimportant small town with few cultural significance aside from its role as a stop on the Chicagoland bus system
