Lindenhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,483 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The historic center of Lindenhurst is located on a square block bounded by State Street to the north, Harrison Street to the east, and Roosevelt Road to the south. It straddles both sides of State Street and has two blocks that are dedicated to commerce and industry: North Second Street runs along one side of town while West Second Street runs perpendicular to it. The first settlers in Lindenhurst were Dutchmen who had come from Rotterdam in 1663. They built a log cabin on what is now state Rd #1 near present day Harrison St., which they named "Hendrik's Huts." The first post office was established in 1847 and was called "New Amsterdam". In 1854, landowner Nicholas Aichner sold some of his land to Abraham Lincoln for $5 per acre (later raised to $10). Lincoln leased it back from Aichner for 99 years until it was bought by Case & Company in 1903; this company became General Electric after merging with Edison Electric Illuminating Company. In 1907, Charles Wacker donated land south of present day Harrison St., across from New Amsterdam post office, for a school district which would become Lacrosse Park School District No. 522 (now part of Grayslake Township). That same year saw the establishment of the city limits around Lindenhurst when Cook County was organized into townships and villages subject only to Cook County government. Most notably during World War II as Lindenhurst Elementary School served as an Army Air Forces training ground for enlisted men/women between 1942-1945; afterward use evolved into adult education institutions including Northwestern Illelle Community College (NICC) from 1976-1985 before being renamed LINDENHURST COMMUNITY COLLEGE in 1991 following annexation by Grayslake Township; currently known as Mundelein University - Illinois Campus Incorporated (UIC) Lindenhhurst is located at 41°27′46″ N 88°01′24″ W / +41°28′02″ N 88°14′48″ W / -88°00′00″ E . Lindenhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,922 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lindenhurst was founded in 1872 by German immigrants and has been home to a variety of cultures including Germans, Italians, Poles and Czechs. The name "Lindenhurst" comes from the old German words "Linde" meaning woods or meadow and "Hurst" meaning fortress or stronghold. The first settlers were two families of thirteen each who arrived on October 26th, 1872 from Hamburg, Germany aboard the SS Friedrich Wilhelm Dönitz with 129 passengers. They named their new community after their patron saint - St. Jerome - which would later become Lindenhurst Manor (now known as Easton Manor). At first there was only one store and one post office in town but within a few years there were several businesses including an ice cream parlor (1874), bakery (1875), tailor shop (1876) and grocery store (1877). By 1886 Lindenhurst had its own school district which remain until today. During World War I many residents served in the armed forces with distinction including Sergeant Julius Wirth who had his family's home bombed during World War II while he was away working as a censor for the US Office of Information; Corporal John Larkin who fought at Omaha Beach; Lieutenant Colonel Harry Pappenheimer who commanded American forces during DACVAS Invasion of Sicily; Private First Class Maurice Sheets whose unit liberated Majdanek concentration camp on July 20th 1945; Sergeant George Sockett who helped lead American soldiers into Prague Castle on September 17th 1944 – earning him the Medal of Honor for heroism that same day; Warrant Officer Joseph Juhlman who led 3rd Battalion 67th Infantry Regiment through Holland-Eupen Pocket to liberate Arnhem on April 15th 1945 just prior to surrendering at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp later that day. In addition to these veterans many local residents also served in US military campaigns such as WWII leading up to V-E Day or during early Korean conflicts such as support for UN troops fleeing Kimpo Airfield when North Korea closed down that airfield in 1950 following reports of Communist infiltration into South Korea. In 1955 there was an influx of 300 new residents when Friends School opened adjacent to Lindenhurst High School making it one of the largest high schools ever constructed in Illinois outside Chicago’s Loop area whereupon Lindenhurst became known colloquially as “Families Town” due to its large proportionate number of children living with parents between ages 10-25 years old making up almost 60% of all households herein compared to less than 25% nationally according to 2002 Census data After decades spent serving both locals and newcomers alike, business hours slowly began shrinking beginning around 1975 as more people moved away for jobs or other reasons leaving little opportunity for retail stores nearby without competition from neighboring towns like Lemont or Streamwood which experienced similar economic declines over time . This hardening trend continued until 2006 when talks started among some investors about revivingLindenhhurst by opening satellite stores inside larger shopping malls located throughout Chicagoland . However , no action followed until last year when plans picked up again after word got out about possible redevelopment possibilities near Hammondsbury Park .
